Use and side effects of prescription medications and alternative therapies commonly used to treat diseases affecting the various systems of the human body including psychiatric disorders.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: AHE 130 and 131 with a minimum C grade; concurrent enrollment in AHE 133.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify examples of drugs from the top 200 given the classification.
2. For the top 200 Rx drugs, describe major therapeutic effects as well as potential adverse effects and important drug interactions for each.
3. Given a patient�s drug regimen, explain how each medication relates to the patient�s medical diagnoses.
4. Identify drugs as legend, controlled substance, or OTC.
5. Give the generic names of top 200 proprietary drugs.

2. Drug mechanisms of action, therapeutic uses, adverse effects and contraindications.
3. Drug classes and frequently prescribed drugs in each class.
4. Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
5. Drugs interactions, mechanisms.
6. Identify how culture influences the use of prescription and OTC drugs or alternative therapies.
