Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Increase motor skills, coordination and rhythm through learning basic moves and variations of the waltz.
  2. Increase fitness through sustained movement required in waltzing.
  3. Increase nonverbal and verbal communication skills through leading and following in partner dancing.
  4. Master enough waltz basics to dance with confidence and pleasure with any partner of the same level of skill.

Course Contents

  1. Basic 6 count waltz step and its relationship to the music.
  2. Appropriate body and hand position (the ""frame"") for each style and variation.
  3. Depending on the progress of students, up to four styles of waltzing: simple basic (counter-clockwise), turning waltz (clockwise), ""shadow"" waltz, and cross-step waltz, including transitions from one style to another while dancing.
  4. Depending on the progress of students, up to five variations such as zig-zag, side-to-side, inside and outside turns, orbits, pivots, grapevine and waterfall.
