 Course Description  

Introduction to fiberglass reinforced plastics with emphasis on chemical safety applicable to poly and vinyl ester resins, solvents, and epoxies. Hands-on training in use of molds, gel coats, release agents, resins, cosmetic color matching and reinforcing materials in hand layup and structural repair.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand the safety hazards and workplace precautions that need to be taken when working with hazardous chemicals such as resins, catalysts, epoxies, solvents, and fillers; safely select proper materials and molds to make parts or patches for repair.
  2. Properly prepare molds for use.
  3. Spray jell coat materials.
    • Cosmetic color matches on non-structural and structural repairs.
  4. Perform hand layup using mats, rovings, and reinforced materials.
    • Make structural and cosmetic repair using fillers, gelcoats and resins.
  5. Use fillers, sealers, and epoxies to make repairs.

Course Contents

  1. Safety hazards and workplace precautions regarding hazardous chemicals such as resins, catalysts, epoxies, solvents, and fillers.
  2. Selection and preparation of molds using parting agents.
  3. Spray gun in application of PVA jell coats and resins.
  4. Methods of reinforcing using glass mat, woven roving, carbon fiber, mylar, and others as may be needed for strength.
  5. Grinding and shaping materials to fit.
  6. Splicing of new materials to old and bonding to wood or metal.
  7. Cosmetic repairs.
  8. Structural repairs.
    • Simple laminates.
    • Cored Laminates.
