Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Test the starting battery using common shop equipment.
  2. Test starter motor operation both on and off the engine.
  3. Diagnose and repair common starting problems of marine engines.
  4. Perform preventative maintenance on the fuel system including injector, lift pumps, and system bleeding procedures.
  5. Perform mechanical preventative maintenance on the cooling system.
  6. Perform winterization tasks, commissioning tasks and 100 hour services of common marine diesel engines.
  7. Demonstrate understanding of the operation of the marine engine by passing the final exam with a competency of at least 70%.
  8. Perform basic electrical system testing of starting and charging systems.
  9. Perform typical tune-up procedures on conventional breaker point ignition systems including removing and replacing spark plugs, points, condenser, and ignition wires.
  10. Perform ignition timing checks and adjustments using timing light and tachometer.
  11. Perform distributor advance testing using off the engine techniques, including static timing installation of distributor.
  12. Test fuel pump delivery pressure.
  13. Adjust carburetor fuel/air ratio mixture adjustments on a running engine.
  14. Remove, disassemble, clean and rebuild typical marine carburetors.
  15. Diagnose cooling system problems by flow testing and temperature measuring methods.
  16. Perform lubrication system service.
