 Course Description  

Introduction to composite manufacturing and repair of windblades with emphasis on thermoset prepreg technology. Hands on training in manufacturing and repair using VIP/Vacuum Bagging with proper bleeder schedules, hot-bond repairs/heat blankets, and damage inspection repair techniques. Includes preparation for American Composites Manufacturer's Association (ACMA) Wind Blade Construction and Repair certification exam.

Prerequisite: CMPST 121 and 123 with a "C-" or higher.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify the safety hazards and workplace precautions that need to be taken when working with hazardous chemicals such as resins, catalysts, initiators, epoxies, solvents, and fillers; safely select proper materials and equipment to make and repair parts.
  2. Determine the extent of damage to fiber reinforced plastic sandwich panels.
  3. Perform repairs using hot-bond repair equipment in accordance with standard industry procedures.
  4. Demonstrate how to position, secure, and control large area heat blankets to industry standards.
  5. Perform vacuum bagging techniques, proper bleeder schedules, and inspection techniques.
  6. Label the consumable materials used in wind blade construction and repair.

  5. Methods of using carbon fiber, Mylar, Kevlar, and prepregs.
  6. Fundamentals of solid laminate and sandwich panel construction methods.
  7. Fundamentals of vacuum bagging materials and processes.
  8. The use of bleeder, breather schedules, de-bulking/consolidation concepts, and leak checking.
  9. Large nylon bag building construction.
  10. Damage detection methods used to assess a damaged structure.
  11. Nondestructive testing of structural repairs.
