 Course Description  

Greenhouse management for small farm to commercial scale production, including structure selection, laws and regulations, control over the growing environment, and crop production and health. Students produce a greenhouse management plan. Field trips are an integral part of this course.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe and compare small farm to commercial scale greenhouse structures, designs, and materials given varied site conditions and production objectives.
  2. Interpret laws and regulations that pertain to greenhouse land use zoning, water usage, chemical application, organic certification, and postharvest practices.
  3. Manage the growing environment of a greenhouse, such as temperature, humidity, light, and water, and assess opportunities for energy and resource conservation.
  4. Demonstrate greenhouse soil preparation, plant propagation, and water and nutrient balance, and produce a comprehensive greenhouse management plan.
  5. Apply greenhouse appropriate Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and other pestiferous control techniques to maintain crop health, vigor, and productivity.
  6. PROGRAM OUTCOME: Plan, start from seed, grow to maturity and harvest vegetable or ornamental plants in greenhouse or in open field.
