 Course Description  

Provides instruction in basic bedside nursing skills. This course is divided into three sections. Section One: Consists of CPR, bloodborne pathogens, HIV/AIDS, First Aid and Fundamentals of Care Giving. Students will receive a certificate for American Heart Healthcare Provider CPR, bloodborne pathogen training, Red Cross First Aid, disaster preparedness and the seven hour HIV/AIDS training certificate. Section Two: provides hands on practical experience in basic bedside nursing skills. The training program consists of the following: Fundamentals of Care Giving and bedside Nursing Assistant Care. Students receiving their NAC license are eligible for employment from a variety of health care facilities. Section Three: Exam Preparation is designed to help students take the nursing assistant certification in Washington State. The purpose of the Prep section is to provide hands on practical experience in basic bedside nursing skills and to learn test taking strategies. After successful completion of the NAC NURS 120 course, students are eligible to sit for the NAC exam.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate basic technical skills which facilitate an optimal level of functioning for the patient, recognizing individual, cultural, and spiritual diversity.
  2. Demonstrate basic personal care skills.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to identify the psychosocial characteristics of all patients including persons with mental retardation, mental illness, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and related disorders.
  4. Incorporate principles and skills of restorative nursing in providing nursing care.
  5. Demonstrate behavior which maintains and respects patients' rights and promotes patients' independence, regardless of race, religion, life-style, sexual orientation, disease process, or ability to pay.
  6. Respect patient's property, i.e. does not take patient/resident property for own or other�s use or benefit. Does not solicit, accept or borrow money or property from the patient/resident.
  7. Use communication skills effectively in order to function as a member of the nursing team.
  8. Use procedures and techniques to prevent the spread of microorganisms. Demonstrate the ability to identify and implement safety/emergency procedures.
  9. Demonstrate knowledge of, and is responsive to, the laws and regulations which affect his/her practice including, but not limited to the following:
    • Patient abuse and neglect; Patient complaint procedures;
    • Workers right to know; and the Uniform Disciplinary Laws.
