Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Develop an understanding and command of contextually and culturally appropriate utterances in written and spoken Chinese.
2. Discover and practice aspects of the language that differ from his/her own, such as the tonal nature of the spoken language and the logographic written system, and develop both listening and reading comprehension.
3. Explain how and why Chinese people may behave and interact in certain ways that differ from his/her own, and display empathetic respect for multiple races, social classes, and various backgrounds of people from the Chinese-speaking societies.
4. Use appropriate verbal and nonverbal communication skills to function more effectively in Chinese-speaking cultures and communities.
5. Describe and demonstrate an understanding of the Chinese people's philosophical perspectives, their way of life, and contributions to world civilization.
6. Demonstrate language structures and behaviors that enable him/her to appropriately initiate, sustain, and close a conversation in a variety of real-life situations with people from Chinese-speaking cultures and communities.
