 Course Description  

This course is designed to help students complete the Social Studies requirements for the HS21+ diploma. Students will fulfill Social Studies requirements through individualized course work as reflected in educational plan developed in HS21+ portfolio course.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate completion of HS21+ diploma requirements for Social Studies related to Civic Engagement.
  2. Demonstrate completion of HS21+ diploma requirements for Social Studies related to Diversity. Understand physical, cultural, and geographical characteristics to work effectively with populations representing diverse backgrounds, life experiences, and abilities.
  3. Demonstrate completion of HS21+ diploma requirements for Social Studies related to world history. Understand how major global events (for example, industrialism, colonialism, World Wars I and II, the Russian Revolution, the nuclear arms race, etc.) have shaped the world today
  4. Demonstrate completion of HS21+ diploma requirements for Social Studies related to Civil Rights.
    • Familiarity with the ideals and principles of the United States and citizenship, including those in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and other foundational documents.
    • Familiarity with the struggle for civil rights and justice in American history for all citizens, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.
  5. Demonstrate completion of HS21+ diploma requirements for Social Studies related to Social Justice. Understand the issues of fairness and equity within a given society (i.e. the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society) either in the United States or in another modern society.
