Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Use simple, complex, and compound sentences effectively.
    • Identify and correct sentence fragments.
    • Select appropriate and consistent verb tenses.
    • Correctly combine sentences using appropriate transitional words and phrases and appropriate use of commas.
  2. Display writing competencies appropriate for transition into CWPA, I-BEST or Professional/Technical courses.
    • Write basic summary paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting details, closing sentences, and transitional phrases.
    • Write basic response paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting details, closing sentences, and transitional phrases.
    • Implement a writing process that includes conscious use of planning, revision, and editing.
    • Write, revise, and edit own writing to create clarity and unity of ideas. Receive constructive criticism and respond/revise accordingly.
  3. Formulate and analyze arguments.
  4. Identify and analyze uses of a number of literary devices in a variety of texts at appropriate reading levels.
