 Course Description  

ELA students with clearly defined academic goals will begin the intensive study of academic English, expand academic skills, and develop habits of successful learners.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Recognize and identify basic elements of the English language such as simple present, progressive, and simple past tenses; formation of questions syntax; and adverbs and prepositions of time.
  2. Write and read basic academic instructions.
  3. Create compound sentences an paragraphs and maintain a weekly journal.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to use an English-English dictionary.

Course Contents

  1. Read and demonstrate understanding of a simple outside reading book.
  2. Locate and understand main ideas and details in level-appropriate readings.
  3. Read simple instructions with sufficient comprehension to carry them out.
  4. Write short compositions in class or as homework (creative writing, picture writing, story completion, etc.).
  5. Write journals on a regular basis.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to find new words in an English-English dictionary.
  7. Demonstrate control of basic grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, and spelling skills.
