 Course Description  

ELA students with clearly defined academic goals will begin the intensive study of academic English, expand academic skills, and develop habits of successful learners.

  1. Perform basic functions in English (banking, restaurants, shopping, transportation, etc.).
  2. Initiate conversations and make small talk.
  3. Understand and ask/answer questions about oral material such as taped conversations, stories, etc.
  4. Perform in short interviews with native English speakers on factual matters.
  5. Respond to/give oral instructions (maps, etc.).
  6. Ask increasingly complex questions in English.
  7. Write dictations of appropriate length, vocabulary, grammar.
  8. Write notes with important details.
  9. Understand basic types of reduced speech.
  10. Enhance English pronunciation and intonation skills.
  11. Use increasingly varied and appropriate vocabulary.
