Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Depict normal chain and cyclic alkanes, alkenes and alkynes with structural formulas, condensed structural formulas, and line angle drawings; use these depictions to differentiate between structural, constitutional, and geometric isomers.
  2. Recognize and explain the characteristic chemistry of these organic functional groups: alcohols, amines, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, anhydrides, esters and amides.
  3. Complete elementary organic reaction mechanisms via repositioning of electron pairs.
  4. Differentiate between aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons; recognize six common aromatic molecules: toluene, phenol, aniline, benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, and xylene.
  5. Name simple aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons with substituents; designate chiral centers as R or S.
  6. Match the structures of particular organic compounds discussed in class with their important biological effects or commercial uses.
  7. Demonstrate the safe use of laboratory glassware, equipment and reagents in order to distinguish between and synthesize simple organic molecules; critique laboratory data in terms of precision, accuracy and explanatory power.

General Education Learning Values & Outcomes

Revised August 2008 and affects outlines for 2008 year 1 and later.

2. Critical Thinking

Definition: The ability to think critically about the nature of knowledge within a discipline and about the ways in which that knowledge is constructed and validated and to be sensitive to the ways these processes often vary among disciplines.

Outcomes: Students will be able to . . .
