 Course Description

Basic introduction to welding and cutting. Focuses on the history and development of welding from the working of copper through many of the modern industrial advances of the 20th century. The hazards of welding from electricity, fumes, radiation, etc. and their appropriate safety precautions are discussed in detail. Included is a very basic introduction to the science of metallurgy. Cutting processes covered are oxyfuel cutting, plasma arc cutting, and carbon arc gouging. The major kinds of welding processes covered are SMAW, FCAW, GTAW, and GMAW. The power source, equipment, electrodes, filler metals, are introduced. Welder safety is emphasized throughout and students learn how to recognize weld symbols and how to read drawings and procedures.
