 Course Description

Learn to use precision optical levels and transit squares to level and align machinery. Standard optical alignment procedures will be presented and participants will learn how to solve specific alignment problems. Skill and knowledge proficiency, demonstrated through competency-based performance tasks in the classroom and lab are required for successful completion of this course. At the end of this course, students should be familiar with the proper care and uses of precision optical instruments as well as the versatility and accuracy of this type of instrument. Students will start with the basic functions of a transit square and advance to turning precision 90s using two Brunson Model 76 Transit squares.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Setup and level a precision transit square or tilting level. Perform a two peg test to check the instrument for accuracy prior to usage.
  2. Buck an instrument in between two points. Use and instrument to set both level and plumb. Set equipment and machinery to proper elevation within .001.
  3. Have an awareness of the usefulness of using the proper optical instruments to align machinery in an accurate and efficient manner.
  4. Be familiar with proper terminology used when working with a Brunson Model 76 Transit Square.
  5. Be familiar with the following terminology and activities:
    • a. Autoreflection & Autocollimation. b. Collimation & Collineation. c. Reticle projection and measuring with optical micrometers using a Whyte face scale.
