 Course Description  

Operation, diagnosis, service and repair of automotive HVAC systems, including air conditioning, heater systems, climate control and related electrical circuits. Includes factory repair, retrofitting, and safe handling of refrigerants and related chemicals. Section 609 Certification included.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisites or concurrent enrollment: AT 101 or 107; AT 133; AT 220 or 225; MANF 121 and WT 231.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of automotive HVAC system service hazards and safety by conducting safe practices while working in the lab.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of HVAC system components and their function by correctly identifying components and explaining their operation.
  3. Demonstrate ability to use a manifold gauge set for air conditioning diagnosis by correctly reading system pressures and interpreting their meaning.
  4. Demonstrate ability to diagnose electrical faults in HVAC systems by performing live-vehicle diagnosis.
  5. Demonstrate ability to diagnose mechanical faults in HVAC systems by performing live-vehicle diagnosis.
  6. Demonstrate ability to use a variety of air conditioning service equipment by properly testing, evacuating, recycling, and recharging air conditioning systems.
  7. Demonstrate understanding of automotive air conditioning retrofitting by performing a system retrofit or determining necessary requirements for a given vehicle.
  8. Successfully pass Section 609 Certification for refrigerant handling.
  9. PROGRAM OUTCOME: Demonstrate knowledge and retention of entry-level skills necessary to gain employment and certification in the automotive industry.
