 Course Description  

Introduction to some of the basic aspects of carpentry by giving an overview of the following topics: concrete footing forms; stair building layout & construction; basic wood wall framing; layout and construction of roof rafters; and, cabinet fabrication & installation. Offers the student the opportunity to explore and participate in various hands-on projects relating to basic construction.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Accurately demonstrate the ability to create a 90� angle using the 3-4-5 method. Properly build batter boards and form for footings under string lines on center.
  2. Using a framing square & stair gauges, properly layout stair stringers and roof rafters. Accurately determine unit rise & run when given total rise & total run.
  3. Correctly calculate the material needed for a project. Properly construct a set of wood stairs.
  4. Safely operate & properly maintain the tools associated with a cabinet shop and build a tool box.
