 Course Description  

Apply communication, teamwork and leadership skills to address issues of significance to the LatinX community with an emphasis on mentoring and college access. This is the third of a three-class sequence and should be taken with 1 credit of Learning Into Action.

Prerequisite: BUS 172 with a "D" or better.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Develop identity as a LatinX leader. Reflect and critically assess and enhance personal leadership abilities.
  2. Develop and apply meeting management and project management skills.
  3. Listen and respond actively, critically and respond appropriately in an interpersonal context.
  4. Communicate confidently and competently in writing, one-on-one, in small groups, and/or before the class.
  5. Identify personal self-disclosure, defensiveness, and nonverbal behaviors; listening habits; and conflict styles and apply/demonstrate appropriate techniques to improve any that inhibit effective communication.
  6. Prepare a variety of organized speeches by using thesis development, specific organizational patterns, and effective outlining.
  7. Present speeches confidently before an audience, using communication apprehension anxiety management strategies, effective vocal and nonverbal delivery techniques, and delivery modes appropriate to the assignment, context, and/or occasion.
  8. Use technology to effectively retrieve and manage information, solve problems, and facilitate communication related to assignment preparation, submission, and/or delivery and other classroom issues.
