Stresses voice theory and exercises for improvement in articulation and vocal quality with specialized tracks in broadcast, stage, or (foreign) accent work. Repeatable up to six credits. Classroom or private instruction.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Understand the influence of culture on communication, specifically
   • Recognizing personal and cultural communication patterns
   • Identifying cultural differences in sound production and vocal expressiveness
2. Develop critical thinking skills, specifically
   • Using self-assessment to analyze and critique personal vocal quality
   • Critically applying vocal strategies to oral messages
   • Listening actively and critically to evaluate the communication styles of others
3. Demonstrate basic skills in voice improvement, by
   • Identifying components of the speech process
   • Recognizing, writing, and orally reproducing the sounds of American English and understanding how these sounds are produced
   • Enhancing diction, vocal production and expressiveness, and listening through vocal readings and recordings
   • Applying textbook reading assignments and library/technological research to individual, dyadic, and/or group projects
