 Course Description  

Improve academic skills and confidence through mastering critical thinking, writing, and reading skills. Identify and implement habits, attitudes, and thought processes that lead to academic and professional success.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: CASAS Reading GOALS Score 243-262 OR passing grade in CCB 096. Students enrolling in this course should possess typing and computer skills.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Use simple, complex, and compound sentences effectively.
    • Identify and correct sentence fragments.
    • Use commas correctly and fix run-ons.
  2. Display writing competencies appropriate for transition into college-level courses.
    • Write fully developed paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting details, and transitions.
    • Write 5 paragraph essays that use evidence and quotes from multiple texts to support a claim.
    • Cite sources using a specified style guide (preferably APA).
    • Implement a writing process that includes conscious use of planning, revision, and editing.
    • Choose and consistently apply appropriate tense, style, and document format.
  3. Formulate and analyze arguments.
  4. Develop metacognition and reading strategies through reading routines and extensive social reading opportunities.
