Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Prepare, plan and modify curriculum plans for individual and groups of bilingual learners.
  2. Observe and demonstrate the ability to communicate student progress to other staff and families.
  3. Describe a variety of biliterate instruction methods and strategies.
  4. Respond appropriately and collaborate with family and other professionals to meet the needs of bilingual learners.
  5. Integrate the principles of bicultural development into the practical application of a supportive classroom environment.
  6. Articulate a philosophy of literacy development.
  7. Demonstrate methods and strategies that are effective in meeting the learning needs of children whose first language is not English.

Course Contents

  1. Instructional methods and issues as they relate to effectively working with ESL, bicultural/bilingual children.
  2. Primary and secondary language acquisition and the role of language in learning.
  3. Enrichment or strengths based curriculum versus the deficit models of schooling.
  4. Bilingual/ESL education components.
  5. Issues of culture, diversity and power in the classroom will be discussed in the context of the needs of the ESL, bilingual and bicultural student.
