ELA Level 1 (Beginning ELA Literacy) Students improve English listening, speaking, reading, writing and comprehension with a goal to develop college and career readiness skills.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Write a minimum of three basic declarative sentences using basic capitalization rules and correct end-of-sentence punctuation.
2. Use basic keyboarding techniques to type one basic declarative sentence.
3. Recognize and write the alphabet in upper and lower case.
4. Demonstrate through reading, writing, speaking and listening one-to-one letter correspondences for frequent sounds of each consonant; long and short vowel sounds; and common consonant digraphs.
5. Decode two syllable words and sight read common high-frequency words.
6. Spell simple words phonetically.
7. Sort words into categories that represent common characteristics.
8. Pronounce simple rhyming words and single syllable words; add or substitute individual sounds in simple one syllable words to make new words.
9. Follow agreed upon rules for class discussion asking and answering basic questions to seek help, get information, or clarify.
10. Demonstrate aural comprehension and speaking skills by sharing personal information with limited prompts.
11. Use reading strategies while reading out loud from an appropriate level text; ask and answer basic questions about key details; use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding.
12. Use illustrations, graphs and details in a text to describe key ideas and to gain pre-reading information about content.
13. Identify basic similarities and differences between two basic texts on the same topic.
14. Understand and use vocabulary related to numeracy, ordinal and cardinal numbers, comparisons, and simple math functions and concepts.
