Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Write basic informative/explanatory linked sentences in response to a prompt, and revise based on feedback.
  2. Type a narrative with sequenced events using transition signals and revise based on feedback.
  3. Write a sequence of instructions eg, recipe or 'How To' guide.
  4. Use possessive nouns; possessive and indefinite pronouns; conjunctions; articles; frequently occurring prepositions; verbs to convey past, present and future.
  5. Use context clues to determine the meaning of words or phrases.
  6. Apply words and phrases learned in conversation and texts to informal discussion and respond to the comments of others.
  7. Interact with text using reading strategies to identify the main idea and supporting details; locate key facts and information; use questioning strategies to increase focus and comprehension.
  8. Recognize long and short vowel sounds in spoken single-syllable words and distinguish between similarly spelled words by identifying the different sounds.
  9. Apply English language skills to understanding of math problems including identification of operations in order to solve simple word problems.
  10. Demonstrate basic computer skills including word processing, basic internet searches, and use of college email to communicate with instructor.
