 Course Description  

ELA Level 4 (High Intermediate ESL). Students improve English listening, speaking, reading, and writing and comprehension with a goal to develop college and career readiness skills.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Communicate in writing and revise based on feedback using the appropriate components the following:
   • A narrative with sequenced events using transition signals.
   • A descriptive paragraph
   • A structured summary paragraph including topic sentence, supporting details, and concluding sentence.
2. Determine the meaning of general and content specific works and phrases in a text relevant to a specific topic.
3. Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.
4. Ask and answer questions (who, what, when, where, why, how) to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
5. Use information from illustrations (maps, photographs, graphs, etc) to demonstrate understanding of the text and to support the main idea.
6. Identify and know the meaning of the most common prefixes and derivational suffixes and decode words with common Latin suffixes.
7. Identify nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in general and their functions in particular sentences.
8. Form and use simple verb tenses (past, present and future) of regular verbs and the past tense of frequently occurring irregular verbs.
9. Apply the conventions of spelling including capitalization of holidays, product names, and geographic names.
10. Consult reference materials including print and online dictionaries to correct and check spelling and determine word meaning.
11. Apply reading strategies to effectively read out loud from a level-appropriate text.
12. Analyze and discuss level-appropriate text including asking questions, responding to discourse, and expanding on comments of others.
13. Demonstrate ability to take written notes on an audio /video recording or oral presentation.
14. Apply English language skills and knowledge to understanding basic math problems and interpreting graphs and data.
15. Demonstrate basic computer skills needed for CANVAS access, completion of course assignments, communication, basic internet research, and presentations with visual components.
