 Course Description  

ELA Level 5 (Low Advanced ELA). Students improve English listening, speaking, reading, and writing and comprehension with a goal to develop college and career readiness skills. Prepares students for transition to On Ramp.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Apply standard conventions of English to a structured opinion paragraph supported by evidence; a structured explanatory paragraph; and a short report from notes.
2. Write opinion pieces on topics supporting a point of view with reasons and evidence.
3. Read out loud level appropriate prose with expression on successive readings. Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding.
4. Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words, choosing flexibly from an array of reading strategies including using sentence level context and knowledge of root words.
5. Demonstrate understanding of word relationships including literal and figurative meanings; real life connections between the word and its use; and shades of meaning among related and nuanced words.
6. Accurately and effectively communicate orally using level-appropriate conversational words and phrases including those that signal space and time relationships.
7. Analyze and discuss level-appropriate text(s) containing illustrations, graphs and/or data.
8. Apply Reading Apprenticeship strategies to understanding academic texts and describe the relationship between ideas.
9. Explain ideas, opinions, and understandings respectively while collaborating with classmates representing diverse backgrounds and viewpoints.
10. Know and use various text features such as: Captions, bold print, sub-headings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus or icons to locate key facts or information in a text.
11. Compare and contrast important points presented in two texts on the same topic.
12. Apply English language to understanding and solving of simple math problems.
13. Apply computer competencies to effective use of CANVAS; communication; sending attachments; internet searches to locate information on a given topic; and create presentations;
