Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Compose an academic essay, understand basic rhetoric, and avoid plagiarism;
  2. Compose complex sentences, subordinating clauses, and compound-complex sentences.

Course Contents

  1. Read and demonstrate understanding of 120-150 page novel, to be read outside of class;
  2. Read/write reports on newspaper and magazine articles;
  3. Write well-formed paragraphs/essays using clear organization, topic sentences/conclusions, specific support, transition signals, paragraph unity;
  4. Write smooth and well-connected compositions of more than 3 paragraphs using the following styles: description, narration, comparison/contrast;
  5. Attend a library orientation to learn to use the general reference collection;
  6. Demonstrate the ability to apply the following reading skills: using context clues, skimming for the general idea, scanning for specific information;
  7. Demonstrate comprehension of written material through paraphrasing and summarizing; write weekly journals;
  8. Increase facilty with verb tenses: clauses, future progressive, past/present perfect & perfect progressive, future perfect, modals; passive voice; conditionals; contractions used in the above tenses; question formation as applicable to the above tenses; cause and effect constructions.
