Provides information, direction and sequence of tasks in preparation for practicum in an agency setting. Students identify specific responsibilities for successful practicum experience and become familiar with the paperwork flow and purpose of each task.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Develop an overview of the wide variety of community agencies that serve as practicum sites for Human Service Students.
  2. Become familiar with and be able to independently utilize all required practicum paperwork.
  3. Understand the process of developing a resume, cover letter, and thank you letter regarding practicums and employment.
  4. Successfully conduct a minimum of one informational interview with a community agency.
  5. Develop an awareness of the Washington State credentialing process for persons working in human services.
  6. Recognize the existence of a number of State laws and regulations (RCWs & WACs) related to the provision of service through State agencies and community programs.
  7. Be exposed to an example of a statement of Client Rights and a code of ethics.
  8. Gain a familiarity with different areas of human service practice by examining six case examples from the text and develop a written response to the case examples.
  9. Become familiar with and be able to fill out and use SVC Practicum paperwork.
  10. Review a number of case examples to learn about human services as practiced in various human service agencies.
