 Course Description  

Group counseling skills for working with addicted clients in residential and outpatient treatment settings. Includes best practices, emerging practices and other major counseling theories and techniques. Required course for students seeking the Substance Use Disorder Counseling degree (including fast track students).

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: HSERV 141 with a "C" or higher.

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand and practice group dynamics and the types and effects of group process in substance use disorder treatment.
  2. Develop a working knowledge of current Best Practices group therapies for substance use disorder counseling.

    • According to purpose (COA, family, etc.)
    • According to population (adolescents, women's, men's, cultural, etc.)
  4. Group size and environment.
  5. Other considerations:
    • Bias/prejudice.
    • Decision-making.
    • Conflict resolution.
    • Closure.
    • Change.
    • Cultural issues.
    • Treatment modalities and membership selection criteria.
  6. Introduction to current Best Practices models.
