Provides the opportunity to pursue substance use disorder counseling qualifications to learn how to work with children and adolescents in an effective manner. Required course for students seeking the Substance Use Disorder Counseling degree (including fast track students).

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Assessment: Learn purpose and structure of adolescent assessment, screening tools, and how to employ them effectively.
2. Diagnosis: Use DSM-5 criteria and screening tools to reach conclusions regarding developmental challenges verses drug related problems.
3. Appropriate treatment placement: Understand and use elements of adolescent programs, Washington State definition of treatment levels and how to access them, and determination of needs.
4. Best Practices models: Develop working knowledge of current Best Practices models for adolescent addictive disorder counseling.
5. Pluralism: Develop an understanding and a working knowledge of the need to use culturally, developmentally and age appropriate materials when working with children.
6. Development: Gain an understanding of the process of child and adolescent development.

1. Child and adolescent development and learning styles.
2. Effective assessment tools and techniques.
   • Using the DSM-5 criteria for diagnostics.
   • Using the ASAM Criteria for assessment, treatment placement and treatment progress evaluation.
3. The Mentally Ill/Chemically Addicted (MICA) adolescent's needs.
4. Successful curriculum development for experiential drug education and skill building classes.
5. Working with other community-based service providers in a teamwork fashion.
6. Establishment of realistic expectations, healthy boundaries and therapeutically beneficial relationships with young clients.
7. Understanding and assisting young clients in getting their personal and social needs met in healthy ways.
8. Current Best Practices models for adolescent treatment.
9. Child and adolescent physical, mental & emotional, social development.
10. Understanding different styles of learning and how to provide activities that reach different types of learners.
