 Course Description  

Disc and drum brake operation, diagnosis and repair. Covers hydraulic system theory and service and anti-lock brake operation and computer controls. Students perform diagnosis and repair on a number of brake systems and a variety of vehicles.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite or concurrent enrollment: AT 100 or 107, AT 121, 131 and ENGL& 101.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand safety and asbestos hazards.
  2. Determine appropriate brake service by following a systematic diagnostic procedure.
  3. Perform on-the-vehicle diagnosis and repair of drum brake assemblies.
  4. Perform on-the-vehicle diagnosis and repair of disc brake assemblies.
  5. Repair assemblies to manufacturer's specifications of tolerances and fit.
  6. Machine brake drums and rotors on a brake lathe.
  7. Properly utilize repair manuals and service information.
  8. Determine the serviceability of calipers, master cylinders, and wheel cylinders, and recondition them as necessary.
  9. Bleed and adjust brake system (including parking brakes).
  10. Diagnose, pack, and replace wheel bearings and seals.
  11. Diagnose and repair A.B.S. braking systems.
  12. Demonstrate understanding of theory of operation of the following:
    • Hydraulics and components.
    • Anti-lock braking systems.
    • Drum and disc brakes.
    • Power brake actuators.
    • Parking brake systems.
