 Course Description  

Examines gender roles and socialization process within the social institution of work, family, the labor force, political organizations, religion, education, economics, and the law, with a comparison of cross cultural study of gender role differentiation presenting the historical implication.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: Appropriate placement or grade of 2.0 or higher in ENGL 099.

1. Sex differentiated roles
   • The concept of role and status; sex role differentiation-genetic or cultural; interaction of biological and cultural factors
2. Tradition and mythology/religion
   • Eve and the Garden of Eden; chivalry and the invention of romantic love; the
3. Socialization and role acceptance -- How we learn gender identity
   • Pink and blue-- infancy and the preschool years; educational attitudes and values; acheiving sexuality
4. Present Economic, Social, Legal and Political Issues
   • Equal values-- unequal opportunity; limitations on social mobility for women in cultures; marriage-- traditional and modern; economics and the law
5. The Male Role
   • Enforced dominance; training for competitive achievement; machismo; pressures for change
6. Theoretical and Philosophical Considerations
   • How do sex roles relate to the dominant values of society; can status be equal if roles differ; will the coming society be androgynous; is there and ideal sex role pattern?
