Orientation to college and program policies, procedures, standards, materials and resources. Introduction to the role of dental assisting within the field of dentistry and to the historical, legal, and ethical issues relating to dental assisting.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify and discuss key figures and events regarding historical influences in the science of dentistry.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of dental support personnel (dental assistant, hygienist, expanded function D.A., and sterile processing tech.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of educational and licensing requirements (DANB, WSDA, local colleges) and legislation that impacts dental professionals.
4. Identify and recognize the significance of professional dental-related organizations.
5. Identify career pathways and education requirements for the dental professions.
6. List and define dental specialty occupations, including new and emerging specialties.
7. Discuss and apply ethics and jurisprudence as it relates to dental assisting.
8. Be knowledgeable of and abide by HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
