An intensive course for English language learners with an emphasis on sentence structure, academic vocabulary development, grammar skills, and reading strategies that will prepare students for EAP 60.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Produce simple sentences that use subjects, verbs, objects, complements, and prepositional phrases.
  2. Use simple tenses to write about past, present, and future events using both regular and irregular verbs.
  3. Correctly spell and use level-appropriate academic vocabulary.
  4. Identify and use parts of speech including nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions, and conjunctions.
  5. Use count and non-count nouns; articles; coordinating conjunctions; and modals of permission.
  6. Use there is/there are in sentences.
  7. Paraphrase sentences and write one-sentence summaries of assigned readings.
  8. Effectively revise and edit sentences through peer revision, or tutor visits, or instructor feedback.
  9. Read and write about ELL novels, or non-fiction, or short stories.
  10. Read academic texts using appropriate reading strategies or Reading Apprenticeship Routines from Reading for Understanding by Schoenbach, Greenleaf, and Murphy (2012).
  11. Demonstrate global citizenship, critical thinking, and metacognition.
