 Course Description  

Operation, diagnosis, service and repair of automotive engines, including discussion of internal components, diagnosis of engine related problems, cooling system operation and diagnosis, and repair procedures. Engine rebuilding techniques and performance modifications will be discussed. Proper use and care of precision tools and equipment included.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisites or concurrent enrollment: AT 101 or 107; AT 133, AT 210 and WT 133.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate understanding of engine and cooling system service hazards and safety by conducting safe practices while working in the lab.
2. Demonstrate understanding of engine and cooling system components and their function by correctly identifying components and explaining their operation.
3. Demonstrate ability to diagnose cooling systems problems correctly by performing live-vehicle diagnosis
4. Demonstrate ability to repair a variety of cooling system problems correctly and perform cooling system services by performing live-vehicle repairs.
5. Demonstrate ability to correctly disassemble, inspect, and reassemble an engine by following a systematic process and operational testing when completed.
6. Demonstrate ability to perform precision measurement of engine components by using various measuring tools to obtain accurate measurements and calculated clearances.
7. Demonstrate ability to diagnose engine leaks and noises correctly by performing live-vehicle diagnosis.
8. Demonstrate ability to repair a variety of engine related problems by performing live-vehicle repairs.

7. Design, operation, inspection and service of pistons, rings and connecting rods.
8. Engine cleaning and assembly techniques.
9. Engine lubrication and break-in procedures.
10. Engine gaskets, seals and hardware.
11. Engine noise diagnosis.
12. Engine leak diagnosis.
13. Operation, diagnosis and repair of cooling system radiators, water pumps and thermostats; cooling system flushing.
14. Operation, diagnosis and repair of engine cooling fans, belts, and hoses.
