 Course Description  

Prepares students to recognize, respond, and manage First Aid, and CPR emergencies. Covers disaster preparedness training. First Aid, AHA Basic Life Support (BLS), and 7 hour HIV/AIDS prevention certificates are awarded after successful completion of this course.

Prerequisite: AHE 101 with a "C" or higher or concurrent enrollment.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Respond to an emergency. Use the 911 or emergency Medical Services System.
2. Discuss the Good Samaritan Laws. Discuss blood, body fluids and disease transmission.
3. Discuss uses and requirements for medical emergency crash carts. State several common emergencies and the proper response to them.
4. Perform procedures for breathing emergencies and cardiac arrest. Understand HIV/AIDS prevention theory.
5. Use the automated external cardiac defibrillator.
6. Understand disaster preparedness and how to be prepared for a variety of situations.
7. Demonstrate and discuss the roles of healthcare professionals during emergency and disaster situations.
8. Document requirements for emergency evacuation of a healthcare setting by participating in a mock exposure event.

Course Contents

1. Recognizing an emergency.
   • Repsonding to an emergency. 911 or Emergency medical services system.
   • Primary survey. Good Samaritan Laws.
   • Blood, body fluids and disease transmission.
2. Preparing for an emergency.
   • Disaster preparedness. The medical crash tray or cart.
3. Common emergencies.
   • Shock, wounds, burns. Musculoskeletal injuries.
   • Heat and cold-related illnesses. Poisoning.
   • Sudden illness. CVA.
   • Heart attack.
4. Procedures for Breathing Emergencies and Cardiac Arrest.
   • Heimlich Maneuver. Rescue Breathing.
   • CPR for all ages.
5. HIV/AIDS prevention.
   • Prevention of HIV/AIDS for the Healthcare worker.
   • Special populations and cultural issues impacting the spread and transmission of HIV.
6. Use of AED. Disaster preparedness training.
7. Requirements for emergency evacuation of a healthcare setting by participating in a mock exposure event.
