 Course Description  

Practical hands-on experience in core construction skills. Includes basic building vocabulary and nomenclature in the safe operation of hand and power tools. Covers construction math applications and exposure to construction trade clusters. Instruction will include OSHA 10-Hour Construction Industry Certification and fork lift operation certification.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Understand and apply construction math to projects. Understand construction terms and vocabulary.
2. Set-up a safe work environment. Recognize unsafe work conditions and practices.
3. Interpret basic blueprints and layout for small projects. Calculate material takeoff and estimate cost of project.
4. Identify and use hand tools safely. Identify and use portable and stationary power tools safely.
5. Cut and install laminate and trim with router. Layout/mark/cut sheet rock/drywall.
6. Make sheetrock repairs. Install sheet rock and corners.
7. Texture and finish sheetrock drywall joints. Use framing square to layout rafter cuts.
8. Use framing square to layout stair stringers. Understand building codes related to stair construction.
9. Layout a 2x4 stud wall for framing. Read and understand the importance of Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
10. Recognize the importance of working with diverse populations within a construction environment.
11. Work in teams and develop teamwork.
12. Understand the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and its content related to the construction industry.
13. Describe, identify and install anchors, fasteners and adhesives.
14. Identify and select proper building materials. Use a forklift.
