 Course Description  

This clinical course provides hands-on opportunities to apply foundational nursing concepts in a dynamic acute care setting and in simulation. Guided by experienced faculty and healthcare professionals, build upon foundational nursing concepts in the acute care setting, deliver person centered nursing care, and collaborate within a multidisciplinary team. Gain confidence in prioritizing and managing patient needs, all while demonstrating effective communication, critical thinking skills and culturally congruent care.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: NURS 181 and NURS 182 with "B-" or higher and concurrent enrollment in SOC 191.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Advocate for patients and families using appropriate strategies.
2. Demonstrate professional communication skills with members of the interdisciplinary team, i.e. health information, admission and discharge teaching.
3. Illustrate the concept of holistic care as applied to diverse populations.
4. Use the nursing process to provide holistic care for patients experiencing alterations in health function, i.e. integumentary alterations, renal and urinary alterations, male and female reproductive alterations.

6. Discuss legal and ethical principles related to the childbearing family.
7. Use the nursing process to provide holistic care for the childbearing family.

3. Fundamental care of the client with Renal and Urinary Alterations.
   • Infectious and Inflammatory Alterations of the Urinary Tract. Obstructive Alterations of the Urinary System.
   • Obstructive Alterations of the Urinary System. Infectious and Inflammatory Alterations of the Kidney.
   • Cancer of the Bladder and Kidney. Vascular Alterations of the Kidney.
4. Family Health, Female and Male Reproduction and Sexually transmitted diseases.
   • Fundamental care of the Male client with Reproductive Alterations. Fundamental care of the Female client with Reproductive Alterations.
   • Fundamental care of the Female client with Breast Alterations. Fundamental care of the client with Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
5. Fundamental Alterations of the client with Integumentary Alterations.
