 Course Description  

For EMTs who need to acquire wilderness emergency medical skills and knowledge to be certified as Wilderness EMTs. Learn to provide patient care using improvised equipment.

Prerequisite: FIRE 242 or EMT-B certification.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Prepare a backpack that includes the equipment and supplies needed to manage medical emergencies in the wilderness.
2. Manage bleeding, wounds, shock, burns, and bone and joint injuries in the wilderness.
3. Provide care for head, eye, face, dental, chest, abdominal, and spinal injuries in the wilderness.
4. Provide care for environmental emergencies including heat illnesses, cold-related injuries and illnesses, altitude illnesses, animal and plant injuries, and lightning strikes.
5. Improvise litters to transport ill and injured patients in the wilderness.
6. Purify water and manage hygiene problems in the wilderness.
7. Use plants from the local area to treat injuries and illnesses.
8. Manage simulated medical emergencies in the wilderness.
