 Course Description  

Introduction to fiberglass reinforced plastics, poly and vinyl ester resins, solvents, and epoxies. Emphasis on chemical safety applicable to working with composite materials while performing hands-on training in use of molds, gel coats, release agents, resins, cosmetic color matching and reinforcing materials in hand layup and structural repair.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify the safety hazards and workplace precautions that need to be taken when working with hazardous chemicals such as resins, catalysts, epoxies, solvents, and fillers; safely select proper materials and molds to make parts or patches for repair.
2. Demonstrate the use of parting/release agents and prepare molds for use.
3. Perform hand layup using fiberglass mats, rovings, reinforcements and polyester resins.
4. Describe the advantages and disadvantages in the use of different types of coring, and demonstrate sandwich construction.
5. Show the ability to make structural and cosmetic repair using fillers, gelcoats, resins and fiber reinforcements.
6. Demonstrate the proper, safe method of spraying gel coat.
7. PROGRAM OUTCOME: Demonstrate the proficient application of composite manufacturing methods, materials and tools.

1. Safety hazards and workplace precautions regarding hazardous chemicals such as resins, catalysts, epoxies, solvents, and fillers.
2. Selection, preparation of molds, and the use of parting agents.
3. Application of gel coat.
4. Methods for single skin construction using fiberglass mat and woven roving.
5. Creating filets.
6. Coring materials and processes for sandwich construction.
7. Grinding, trimming, and shaping parts to fit.
8. Structural repairs.
   • Simple laminates.
   • Cored Laminates.
9. Secondary bonding of new materials to old and bonding to wood or metal.
10. Cosmetic repairs.
11. Spray gun in application of PVA jell coats and resins.
