 Course Description  

Includes selection, installation and service of marine hot air and hydronic heating systems. Covers operation, selection, installation and testing of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Covers fuel gas systems complying with standards from ABYC, NFPA, and Natural Gas Association adjustment of these systems.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Understand and apply applicable standards in system design, installation and repair as follows:
   • A-7 liquid and solid fueled boat heating systems. H-32 ventilation of boats using diesel fuel. H-33 diesel fuel systems. A-26 LPG and CNG fueled appliances.
2. Operate typical diesel fired systems, looking and listening for component function.
3. Troubleshoot basic no-start problems such as no power to controller, no ignition, excessive smoke, etc.
4. Plan an installation including sketching of ducts or hoses, bill of materials for installation materials, and estimate of labor time.
5. Understand the properties of propane (LPG = Liquefied Petroleum Gas) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuels.
6. Have a working knowledge of ABYC standard A-24 carbon monoxide detection systems and standard A-1 marine liquefied petroleum gas systems.
7. Understand the differences between steel, aluminum, and fiberglass propane tanks. Install a leak detection system. Have a working knowledge of standard A-22 marine CNG systems.
8. Have a working knowledge of standard A-30 cooking appliances with Integral LPG cylinders.
9. Understand the refrigeration cycle of compression/condensation/expansion/recovery of refrigeration gases.
10. Apply refrigeration system service tools in troubleshooting the following:
    • Manifold gauge set. Leak detection equipment. Temperature measuring apparatus.
    • Refrigerant recovery equipment. Pressure/Temperature relationship charts.
11. Qualify for ASE Refrigerant Gas Handling Certification via self-study (required for purchase of commercial quantities of refrigerant gases).
12. Install and troubleshoot galley refrigerator appliances using AC, DE, and AC/DC electrical power sources. Install and repair sea water cooled heat exchangers for refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
13. Work with magnetic drive pumps for sea water circulation. Understand the function of reverse cycle heating systems.
