 Course Description  

For students intending to major in the sciences. Metabolism and energetics, structure and function of biomolecules, cell structure and function, current applications of biotechnology and molecular biology. Second course of three-quarter series. Lab included.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 with a grade of "C" or higher; and either placement into MATH& 141 OR co-enrollment with MATH& 141 OR completion of MATH& 141 with a grade of "C" or higher; and CHEM& 161 with a grade of "C" or higher (or concurrent enrollment).

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Describe the 4 major types of biomolecules found in living organisms and the importance of biomolecule structure for physiological function.
2. Describe the functional components present in all living cells.
3. Differentiate between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell structures.
4. Explain the cellular mechanisms for storage of genetic information within DNA, and the process of translating the genetic information into functional proteins.
5. Explain how cells transform acquired energy into usable energy within cells using aerobic respiration, fermentation and photosynthesis as the models for metabolic processes.
6. Describe how cells maintain cellular homeostasis through detection and response to changes within the cellular environment.
