 Course Description  

Introduction to advanced composite manufacturing with emphasis on thermoset prepreg technology. Hands-on training in manufacturing with epoxy resins and prepregs using common types of advanced fiber reinforcements.

Prerequisite: CMPST 123 with a "C-" or higher.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the safety hazards and workplace precautions that need to be taken when working with hazardous chemicals such as resins, catalysts, epoxies, solvents, and fillers; safely select proper materials and molds to make parts, patches and repairs.
2. Properly prepare molds for use.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of composite construction governing fiber selection.
4. Use prepreg and advanced composite nomenclature when discussing composite manufacturing.
5. Perform contact molding, vacuum bagging techniques, out of oven autoclave oven curing and Hot Bonder repairs.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of the consumables materials used in vacuum bag/out and in autoclave molding.

Course Contents

1. Safety hazards and workplace precautions regarding hazardous chemicals such as resins, catalysts, epoxies, solvents, and fillers.
2. Selection and preparation of molds using parting agents.
3. Methods of reinforcing using glass mat, woven roving, carbon fiber, mylar, and others as may be needed for strength.
4. Grinding and shaping materials to fit.
5. Splicing of new materials to old and bonding to coring.
6. Use of prepreg materials.
7. Nondestructive testing of structural repairs.
