Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Students will develop competence and confidence to read college level writing.
   • Develop reading techniques including but not limited to flexibility techniques and vocabulary skills.
   • Identify purpose, tone, and bias in works read.
   • Locate main ideas and supporting details.
2. Students will develop writing skills that will prepare them for written work in college level classes.
   • Develop ideas through conscious use of syntax.
   • Organize ideas through paragraph development strategies.
   • Develop short writings through appropriate coordination of paragraphs.
3. Students will implement effective reading and writing processes.
   • Reading process will include previewing, reading, and post-reading activities.
   • Writing process will include conscious use of planning, revision, and editing.

Course Contents

1. Components of the processes of reading and writing
2. Audience and purpose in writing and reading.
3. Claims and support: identifying main idea and specific supporting details.
4. The sentence as the basic unit of written communication: basic sentence structure; correction of sentence fragments, run-ons, and comma splices; sentence effectiveness.
5. Paragraph development: organizational principles, unity, coherence, topic sentences.
6. Writings of two to four paragraphs: focus, unity and coherence.
