 Course Description  

Overview of methods, ideas and concepts for reclamation of composite materials. Focuses on the recycling of fiber reinforced composite material. Highlights waste stream reduction and recycling, the challenges of composites recycling, methods of recycling composites, and an opportunity to recycle composite parts or use recycled composite materials to build new composite parts.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Define the lifecycle of composite materials, the potential methods of waste stream reduction and recycling.
2. Explain the challenges of recycling composite materials.
3. Identify the methods of recycling composite materials.
4. Present a survey of current research being done around the recycling of composite materials.
5. Demonstrate the process of recycling by sorting different types of composite scrap.
6. Demonstrate the build of a composite part using recycled/reused/repurposed composite materials.

2. Thermoset vs. thermoplastic materials.
3. Types of resins and reinforcements.
4. Methods of composite construction.
5. Challenges of recycling composite parts.
6. Shredding and flaking thermoplastic materials.
7. Grinding and chopping thermoset materials.
8. Remolding thermoplastic materials.
9. Using recycled thermoset materials as filler in new parts.
10. Design and create parts from recycled/reused composites.
11. Material testing.
