Learn the skills, tools and processes of effective mediation. Reviews the causes and dynamics of conflict and mediator interventions. Explores communication skills designed to facilitate cooperation and help parties reach agreement. (Required course for students seeking the Generalist degree).

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Facilitate two or more people in a dispute through an eight stage mediation process.
2. Perform appropriate and successful conflict intervention techniques.
3. Utilize mediator communication skills: reflecting, reframing, asking questions, summarizing and active listening.
4. Help individuals brainstorm win-win solutions.
5. Facilitate a conversation with clients using interest-based negotiation techniques.
