 Course Description  

Examine habits, attitudes, and thought processes that lead to academic and professional success. Improve academic confidence through building critical thinking, writing, and reading skills, as well as digital literacy.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: Receive a "P" grade in ELA 015/ESOL 053 and/or a passing grade in ELA 018 (or placement into ELA 018 or ELA 095)

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Implement metacognition through use of reading strategies to demonstrate comprehension by summarizing main ideas.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of multiple discourses to effectively communicate in a variety of settings.
  3. Engage with diverse texts to communicate how power, privilege, equity, and empathy affect our daily lives.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of basic paragraph elements to produce cohesive written work.
  5. Write an original paragraph that uses evidence to support a claim.
  6. Apply a multi-step writing process that includes drafting, editing, and proofreading while making use of written and oral feedback to produce a clear and organized final draft.
  7. Apply Standard American English conventions of grammar, word choice and sentence structure, punctuation, and spelling.
  8. Use technology to produce coursework.
  9. Implement college study skills and strategies to successfully complete coursework.
