 Course Description  

ELA students with clearly defined academic goals will take a semi-intensive course for English language learners with an emphasis on academic composition and grammar skills that will prepare students for English 99.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: CASAS and CaMLA testing, B- (80%) or higher in ELA 097, or permission of ELA and EAP department chairs.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Write a narrative composition that demonstrates creative writing techniques such as metaphor, simile, and personification.
  2. Write one-page summaries of assigned book chapters and research sources.
  3. Produce research-based and thesis-driven essays (maximum four pages) that include an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
  4. Accurately write a variety of sentence types including simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences that use level-appropriate academic vocabulary.
  5. Correctly use simple, progressive, and perfect verb tenses to accurately write about past, present, or future events.
  6. Research and analyze sources from assigned texts, and/or library databases, and/or academically appropriate online searches.
  7. Correctly use MLA document formatting, including an MLA Works Cited page when applicable.
  8. Produce effective paraphrases, direct quotes with signal phrases, and integrated quotes that use MLA in-text citation.
  9. Read and critically discuss assigned literature such as novels, or non-fiction, or short stories.
  10. Read texts using appropriate reading strategies or Reading Apprenticeship Routines from Reading for Understanding by Schoenbach, Greenleaf, and Murphy (2012).
  11. Demonstrate global citizenship, critical thinking, and metacognition.
