 Course Description  

Training for the EMT-Basic level per National Standards Curriculum and abiding by the laws of Washington State. Learn to recognize, assess, and treat medical and trauma-related emergencies at the basic life support level. Preparation for National Registry EMT certification testing and includes the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician certification practical examination for EMT-Basic.

Prerequisite: FIRE 247 with a "C" or higher.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of an allergic or diabetic reaction and be able to properly assist and treat.
2. Understand the concept of bleeding, shock, hypo-perfusion, the types and causes, and effectively treat.
3. Perform proper musculoskeletal care, immobilization and other trauma related injury care.
4. Understand the differences in treating infants and children, common medical and trauma related emergency and proper treatments.
5. Knowledge of emergency medical service operations, rescue techniques, triage, and other operational issues as they related to the EMT-Basic.
6. Communicate and understand how to relate to a diverse and multicultural population in an emergency situation.
7. Work as a team member.
