 Course Description  

Examines nursing care complex physical alterations in the pediatric individuals as well as adult individuals who are experiencing complex alterations in the endocrine, gastrointestinal and gastrointestinal accessory systems. In addition to medical-surgical care, the care of patients experiencing a high risk pregnancy and high risk newborns is described. Concepts of context and environment, knowledge and science, personal and professional development, quality and safety, relationship centered care and teamwork are integrated throughout. (Section two of a two-part course.)

Prerequisite: NURS 274, NURS 276, and NURS 277 with a "B-" or higher.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Implement age and gender appropriate, culturally sensitive nursing care for individuals with alterations in the following: Musculoskeletal, neurological, sensory, endocrine, gastrointestinal, and gastrointestinal accessory systems. and individuals experiencing a high risk pregnancy or complications associated with childbirth.
2. Promote adaptation and wellness in individuals across the lifespan.
3. Identify and demonstrate how the nursing process is used to implement multidimensional care in patients experiencing alterations in the following: Musculoskeletal, neurological, sensory, endocrine, gastrointestinal, hepatic, pancreatic systems as well as high risk pregnancy and complications.
4. Explain how alterations in adaptation may impact developmental task accomplishment of patients throughout the lifespan.
5. Select specific communication techniques to promote adaptation in adult and pediatric patients.
6. Describe leadership roles appropriate to adult and pediatric patients who are experiencing selected alterations in wellness.
7. Demonstrate health teaching strategies appropriate to adult and pediatric patients who are experiencing selected alterations in wellness.
8. Explain the role of pharmacological agents and related nursing responsibilities in promoting adaptation for patients with specific alterations in wellness.
9. Describe the role of nutrition in adaptation for patients with specific alterations in wellness.
10. Describe legal/ethical principles of nursing practice.
11. Identify safety issues in the implementation of patient care in pediatric and adult patients.
12. Explain how cultural differences may impact the implementation of patient care.
