 Course Description  

Introduction to the diesel engine and its importance to the economy. Covers shop safety, hand and power tools, precision measuring tools, threaded fasteners, torque and tension. Basics of diesel engine operating theory and design, including all internal engine mechanical components. Introduction to preventative maintenance. Mathematics as it relates to the diesel industry will be incorporated. Shop projects include removal, teardown, and inspection of a modern diesel engine.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in DSL 101 or 201; CSS 103 or concurrently enrolled.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Use precision measuring tools.
2. Compute sizes and clearances accurately using above tools.
3. Identify and inspect housing components and follow repair procedures.
4. Adjust valves and injectors using Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) prescribed techniques.
5. Successfully complete a safety assessment.
6. Understand the operating principles of a 4-stroke cycle diesel engine.
7. Understand the concepts of horsepower and its relationship to torque and RPM.
8. Work with fellow students in a team environment.
9. Understand and practice customer communication skills and techniques for a diverse and multicultural population.
